As a result of physical, chemical and biological treatment processes sludge forms. According to the solid waste regulations applied in our country,
it is necessary to remove this sludge. To handle and discharge sludge easily, the concentration of water in sludge is to be reduced by means of different methods.

Sludge having different characteristics (resulting from physical, chemical and biological treatment processes) is thickened by homogenizing in accurately designed sludge thickener, according to surface load, detention time. Slow stirrers manufactured by Artas, chemical preparation and dosing units are used in these units.

The principle of this unit is; to have the sludge retain its water content with pressure between the plates and to obtain a sludge cake. As a result the weight and volume of the sludge is reduced and it can easily be removed by the end-user from the plant site and leachate is sent back to the entrance of the treatment plant. Dewatering of sludge is obtained by filter presses manufactured by Artas.

In these units, the sludge passes between rollers with different diameters, due time it is pressed by two or more parallel moving belts having pores and consequently the water is removed from sludge. The chief advantage of belt presses is large amounts of dry sludge cake is obtained and less power is required.
